This shawl pin, as some of you may remember, is based on the headdress ornament of an ethno-linguistic group in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The spiral form represents a cosmic shape, a nearly universal way that people across time and geographic space and diverse religious and cultural backgrounds have depicted the cyclic character of life. The snake sheds its skin and renews itself, a feature that has provided people across the globe with a metaphor for cycles of transformation related to people, the seasons, the heavens.
